Snoring May Be a Sign of Sleep Apnea

Nobody feels good after a poor night of sleep. For more than 18 million Americans, this happens night after night. Sleep apnea is a serious condition that causes a person to stop breathing during sleep. In some cases, you may stop breathing hundreds of times in one sleep cycle.

Sleep apnea may be caused by genetics, poor posture, allergies, enlarged tonsils, and other issues. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form of sleep apnea. This is caused by airways in the throat and mouth collapsing during sleep. If you have obstructive sleep apnea you or your partner may notice:

Loud, frequent snoringChoking or gasping that wakes you Feeling tired or fatigued during the day Extended pauses in breathing during sleep Restless Sleep • Nocturia (waking during the night to go to the bathroom)

Irritability or personality change Poor memory or concentration • Morning Headaches Weight gain Depression • Unrefreshing Sleep • Insomnia • Decreased sexual desire

Sleep apnea may increase your risk of developing a heart attack, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, liver disorders, acid reflux, and impotence. If you think you may have sleep apnea, contact our office for a consultation.
